Ahhhhh aging. Maybe you’re wishing you didn’t have another birthday coming up. Turning 1 year older is inevitable, so I cannot tell you how to literally turn back the years.
According to the American Federation For Aging Research, said that “if there are 100’s of different biological pathways affecting aging, then odds are slim that science will find a way to slow down how we age.”
In other words, it’s not likely that we can slow down how quickly we can turn another year older.
But……..hold on ….calm down!
BUT what would you think if I told you that you CAN still reverse aging? I’m saying it is possible to turn back your body’s “age”, which can help you add more quality years to your life! And I’ve never met anyone who would be opposed to improving the quality of their life.
Dr Dean Ornish, a world-renown lifestyle medicine physician and creator of the Ornish Diet said, “Our bodies are much more dynamic than we had once recognized, and the more you change at any age the more you can improve.”
It’s never too late to change! Aging is, in fact, a very multi-faceted phenomenon, therefore, the more active, healthy eating, and physically fit you are now, the better you will feel as you get older.
We’ll focus on bullet point #4 in this post, but I wanted you to read the 5 different factors correlated to a shorter lifespan:
The definition of anti-aging is to slow down or stop the falling apart of human cells. Believe it or not, what you eat ends up finally getting absorbed by the cells of our body and affects how our body ages. In order to REVERSE AGING IN AS FEW AS 90 DAYS, in this post I’ll:
On top of that, you’ll get 2 FREE PRINTABLES (Available to download towards end of this post!
Youth activating concentrate.
Discover the skin you were born to have.
Smoother radiant skin.
Perhaps at least 1 of the above phrases you seen marketed on an overnight cream container or in a commercial. As popular as “outer youth” really is, age is not defined by how old you “look” on the outwardly, though taking care of your skin (limiting sun exposure) certainly contributes to healthier skin cells. Then how do we answer the question “where does aging start?
Aging BEGINS in the cells of your body, and even Dr. Dean Ornish has said, “we may be able to reverse aging at a cellular level”.
Head’s up. Aging is from the inside out!
So our cells are where we need to go FIRST!
Before we get into the fine points of Aging, you want to understand some basics of the human body and cells. If you’re not sure what the cellular structure of your body means, I’ll break it down simply.
You see, look at yourself in the mirror. You’re looking at a body made up of about 10 Trillion cells! And of those 10 Trillion cells, they are grouped into several different cell categories.
EVERYTHING that happens in our body occurs because something is hard at work inside of the cells.
The bone cells keep our bones healthy by absorbing Calcium so we don’t get osteoporosis.
The skin cells help our skin by making fresh cells, healing, and even make our skin look tanner in color when we get sun exposure.
The nerve cells work for the nerves all throughout our body, head to toe, so that we can feel heat, pain, pleasure, pressure.
Are you starting to get the idea now?
Here’s one more example.
When you are using your legs to hike up a hill, the cells in our leg muscles (the muscle cells), they contract and change their shape and size when you’re moving.
Maybe you’re thinking, “okay we have a lot of different types of cells in our body, but what does that have to do with aging? Well, because the piece that ALL CELLS HAVE IN COMMON is that their BASIC STRUCTURE, and the basic structure of a cell is what breaks down, leading to aging.
I’ll make this section short because we don’t need to get into too much detail. Since the beginning of the aging process starts in the cell, I just want to [briefly] mention a few parts you’d see in every human cell:
You’ll find a Nucleus in EVERY SINGLE CELL (as well as in animal, plant, and yeast cells). Scientists like to refer to the Nucleus as the “Brain” because of 2 characteristics:
The Nucleus needs 2 things to keep it running: Ribosomes and Proteins.
The Nucleus makes Ribosomes, and the Ribosomes makes the Proteins.
You’ll find a Cell’s DNA inside of the Nucleus. DNA holds all of the information about your genetics.
You know those companies that can help you find out about your ancestors and learn about your family tree? A company like that studies your DNA from a saliva sample from your mouth. Pretty cool.
Let me also run through the structure of your Genetic makeup because it is the central hub of aging. In other words, when the DNA breaks down, all of the cells in the body can get screwed up.
Below, I’ve visually broken down your Genetic makeup from the BIGGEST structure to the SMALLEST:
Ultimately, if any of the Mitochondria, DNA, Ribosomes, or Nucleus stop working well, then our cells begin to break down – that means cell aging.
If your cells are breaking down in your body “earlier than expected” or faster than what is considered “normal”, then that means premature aging. For sure we don’t want aging to be too soon!
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), by around the year 2030, the U.S. population of people age 65 and older will be close to 71 million, making aging a constant topic of research (more than ever) so we can improve quality of life, and slow down the aging of our cells.
Then why do we age?
As early as 1961 scientists concluded that human cells have a limited life span. But, then I was extremely surprised to find out that WHY we age is still a bit of a science mystery and there are a number of theories.
Don’t let that statement concern you though. The biological aging process is extremely complex, so science still studies it.
The marvelous news is that research has gathered a lot of information about WHAT physical changes that occur to our bodies when we age. We now have a better understanding of what happens during the step-by-step aging process.
How do we grow old?
In other words, what is it that stops working, and then we begin aging?
It is a question that fascinates scientists and just about anyone. Fairly recently, in 2013, a group of researchers gathered to explore more about the aging process.
Following their study, scientists determined that aging occurs when at least 1 of the 9 below processes happen:
Maybe it’s just bad luck whether we have “good” genes or “bad” genes, so there’s nothing you can do about it.
Keep in mind that we cannot change the structure of a gene, but we can influence the way the gene “displays its personality.” Although there are several factors that affect our genes (environment, smoking, physical activity, diet, overal health), we will be focusing on food in this section.
There is a term for the fact that food can affect the way your genes express themselves – nutrigenomics.
Think of the nutrients in food as a “remote control” for your genes – food as the power to turn genes “on” or “off.” Nutrients like glucose, fat, cholesterol, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, or Vitamin C, for example all have the ability to turn certain genes on or off. What might surprise you is how quickly your diet can change the “age” of your genes. Keep reading.
A research team in Pennsylvania studied 2 groups of people:
After just 12 weeks (90 days) of studying both groups:
After 12 months (365 days) of studying both groups:
Just as recently as September 17, 2019, the online journal issue of The Lancet Journal announced: “The healthier you live, the stronger your chromosomes become.”
For example, when it comes to aging, according to a research study mentioned by mindbodygreen:
“Dr. Ornish measured the activity of an enzyme produced by genes, telomerase, believed to be involved in slowing the aging process.” Dr. Ornish discovered that the group of people eating Plant-Based Low Fat, their TELOMERES (the tips of their Chromosomes) were actually LONGER, which meant that aging slowed down!
Every year Nutrition research is showing us eating mainly plant-based has the power to turn “on” the genes that we need to lower inflammation, decrease cancer enzyme activity, and even help us live longer. At the same time, plant foods ALSO have the power to “turn off” the genes that increase inflammation, increase cancer enzyme activity, or shorten life span.
Unfortunately, animal-based foods demonstrate the opposite effect on our genes, compared to plant-based foods. Here are several reasons why:
Below are several (nutritional science-backed) reasons why eating Plant-Based can add more quality years to your life!
TRULY STUNNY EVIDENCE, RIGHT?!
If you had forgotten, a few sections earlier when I mentioned the study about Chromosomes and plant-based eating. Those who ate Plant-Based were able to lengthen and rebuild the ends of their Chromosomes (the tips are called Telomeres), which meant reversing or slowing aging.
The results of nutrition research on genetics, animal foods, and plant-based eating have shown us that Plant-Based foods are mightily packed with compounds that can fight a lot of bad stuff in our bodies.
Anyone who has told you that the only way to get the essential DHA and EPA is by eating fish, is WRONG. Fish eat Algae as food, therefore that is why fish are a rich source of DHA and EPA!! You can easily get a Marine Algae Supplement for your DHA and EPA needs. I talk more about that in the Supplement Section further down.
If you have a hard time with bitter or astringent flavors in certain plant-based foods (like certain leafy greens or soy), smoothies are a gorgeous and colorful way to combine multiple plant-food ingredients.

I can’t write a post about Anti-Aging without a section on skin aging!
Keep in mind, I’m not guaranteeing you that if you eat strictly plant-based, there will be ZERO wrinkles on your face. Assuming though you’re careful about a few other things (not smoking, limiting chronic stress, limited or no animal foods, staying physically active, have few or no diseases), you can certainly slow down outward aging as well.
There are a couple of supplements you can consider (depending on your needs), which, in addition to eating plant-based, can help you feel better, look better, and you could live longer.
Let’s recap what you learned in the post, because I know it’s a lot of information to digest.
Today we can look younger and live longer through cosmetic, medical advances, but truthfully most of us are not living better quality lives. As you’ve learned, we can improve the quality of our life by incorporating a bounty of fruits, grain, vegetables, beans, nuts & seeds.
I mentioned a little earlier, PRINT or DOWNLOAD the 90 DAY ANTI-AGING SHOPPING LIST (ABOVE) so you’re smarter in the grocery store. Below, I’m also including 90 DAY ANTI-AGING CHECKLIST (below) to help you recapture the information you learned, and put Anti-Aging into action so you are more mindful of it on a daily, weekly basis.
